2010 World Cup: Japan Coach Takeshi Okada - My Players Are Starting To Believe In Last Four Finish

With the start of the new decade, Japan’s target of a last four finish at the 2010 World Cup in June is becoming stronger.

Coach Takeshi Okada has been telling the media that he wants a semi-final spot since taking the job at the end of 2007 and now he claims that a number of his players are starting to agree with him.

"Honestly, I am surprised myself," Reuters quoted Okada as saying.

"It is not only me but also my players and staff who feel that we can make it."

"The players have ups and downs and they can flinch when they hit the wall... So I can't say how many on a constant basis," he added.

"But I have a feeling that the number was just a few this time last year and has since exceeded 10 and then 15," he said.

"At the same time, I've told my players that if we become complacent, we're doomed. On paper, I think it's only right we're picked to finish last in the group."

Japan have yet to win a game at a World Cup played overseas and must deal with a tough group in South Africa containing the Netherlands, Cameroon and Denmark.

In order to do so, Okada has highlighted three areas that need attention.

"To outrun our opponents. To outdo them in one-on-one battles for the ball. To raise the accuracy of our skills, especially kicks," he said.
