Girls soccer: Northern Highlands blocked Moorestown to capture title, ending a 24-0-NorthJersey.com

EWING – it wasn't a perfect game. But it was a perfect ending. And this is what it should be recalled in the Northern Highlands in forever.

After it is disappointed by a gritty defense Moorestown for the 72-plus minutes, North Highlands broke with two goals in a minute apart to get heart-accepted, winning 2-0 at the Quakers in the Group 3 State girls soccer tournament final at The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Highlanders ' first championship outright in State's history – previously shared titles in 1991, ' 92 and ' 09 – and this also ended their first perfect season.

However, ensuring perfection does not come easily.

"I really had to work hard for this one," Northern Highlands senior captain Jessica Abrams said. "But when we walked off the field that we said," we are perfect, "and couldn't ask for more than that."

The Northern Highlands (24-0) would not.

The victory record of wins and completed by the greatest season in team history – one that includes a Bergen County title, a League Championship and a State timber sectional title – thanks for the two last push. But it took a lucky turn of events to get the first one.

Two minutes after goalie Highlanders Brooke Holle a brave performance out of the line to save a shot by posting Moorestown forward Megan Kelly, northern highlands scoreless tie when she broke throw-in 25-yard of Jackie Reyneke, from the right sideline slipped through the hands of goalie Moorestown Rebecca Schultz and net to an end in itself, with 7: 25 left.

"I thought [the throw-in] was a mistake, when it turns, Reyneke said. "I was shocked when he went."

North Highlands adding lead 1: 27 later when Freshman forward Hana Kerner seconded on enabling in midfield, and ran in unmarked box before faking that Schultz and tapping the ball into an open goal. It was the second difficult playing Kerner in a row – this standing next to Schultz, when this manoeuvre of the Reyneke throw-in – and this secured the victory with 1: 59 left.

"That was needed here," Kerner said the 11th goal of the year. "When I got past the last defender tried to compose myself so I could place the ball. But after I scored, everything was a Daze ".

The Highlanders he left Moorestown feel the same way as an offensive attack that resulted in a dramatic, 26-3 shot advantage. Moorestown (17-4-2) to keep the Highlanders out of the net deposition of 11 players in to defend. However, they also took from the placement of any serious attack.

"We kept putting pressure on them, and eventually we got one to go," said Northern Highlands coach Tara Madigan. "Things went our way, and this team deserved it."

Deserved and earned a perfect ending.

Boys soccer: Fallston loses 1-0 on Marriotts Ridge to fight title 2A-Baltimore Sun

The Marriotts Ridge Nick Applegate named "John" the biggest goal of his career in football.

Since that was what was on the line, this is likely to remain so for very little.

In a State Championship game 2 still scoreless just over two minutes from halftime, Applegate was alone with the ball on stands just outside the box. Instinctively turned towards goal, fired and then watched history unfold.

The ball looped at Fallston goalie Robbie Kansler before covers only the crossbar, giving the decisive goal with a victory Marriotts Ridge 1-0 at UMBC Stadium ensured their third straight title Mustangs.

"I and the ball was in my leg, so just turned and shot," said Applegate, whose objective was the seventh of the season. "I knew it was important to start the second half with a goal and the goalie was out of line."

The Fallston Kansler, who finished with nine saves, said Applegate caught somewhat off guard with a quick shot.

"I was out a little too and it was a good shot … Couldn't do anything, "he said.

Fallston hopes of a comeback were a serious setback just two minutes and 18 seconds after the score of Applegate, the Defender had issued a Zack Esser red card for a dangerous tackle from behind.

With the Angels playing down a man the rest of the way of Marriotts Ridge defence was able to make a stand.

"I was terribly worried when they scored, I thought we had the opportunity to come back, ' Fallston coach Chris Hoover said. "It was only when we did get a red card, shifts several around and take another player out of the attack.

"At the end we could not find a way to slip a ball there … and we had chances. "

During the Marriotts Ridge current run of three straight Championships, two of them now have come against the Fallston. The Mustangs had previously addressed the Angels 1-0 Overtime defeat of 2009 title game.

None was more dangerous than a Marriotts Ridge shot four minutes that actually found the net before being lifted off by the referee because of a foul Mustang.

"The last two games we've been able to score really early in the first half, probably first 10 minutes," junior Brad Martinelli said. "So Yes, there was great disappointment is not able to effect real soon (tonight)."

The game went into halftime tied at 0-0, however, immediately after the groups intensified back in the field, Marriotts Ridge, it is considered that the driver's seat.

The score marked the fifth time the Applegate in as many games this postseason that the Mustangs have scored first.

"I am the boys, but we haven't won a game in which you gave us until the first goal all year. But we would have won every game we've scored first, "said Marriotts Ridge coach Kevin Flynn. "Get so early (in the second half) was a big deal."

Even after alighting, Fallston red card may not be transferred. The Cougars kept pressing and had a pair of almost on the goal that the stretch, including a free kick by Chris Lievendag was diverted to the crossbar by the Marriotts goalie Pat Moore Ridge (4 stores).

"I knew it was borderline between wheel and hope for the best," said Lievendag.

With the victory, Marriotts Ridge becomes the first County to win three consecutive State Championships, since the River Hill won four straight times from 2002 to 2005. And, for a group of Mustang began just two seniors most of the year, it was a great execution.

"Out of the play-off, we play as well as any of the groups over the past two years," Flynn said. "I believe that this group has grown significantly this year. We do not Shakhtar ready at the beginning of the year, but it certainly was at the end. "

Havre de Grace's boys soccer team will compete in the state tournament for the third time in school history.

Havre de Grace travels to Glen Burnie Saturday night for a Class 1A state semifinal boys soccer game.

The Warriors and Mountain Ridge square off at 7:30 p.m. at North County High School in Glen Burnie (directions via Mapquest). The Warriors athletic department also scheduled a fan bus, which will depart from Havre de Grace High School at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Seats on the bus are $10 for round-trip transportation.

Tickets for the game are $6, and can be purchased online.

Havre de Grace defeated Sparrows Point in penalty kicks Tuesday night to win the Class 1A North region championship.

The victory came in a 5-4 shoot-out session, capped by Brad Davidson's game-winner, igniting a celebration reportedly heard in other parts of the city.

The Bowie High School boys' soccer team is headed back to the Maryland Class 4A state championship game after outlasting Severna Park 4-3 in a thrilling semifinal game on Saturday.

The Bulldogs ended Severna Park's 15-game winning streak and will be trying to win the ninth state title in the program's history and its second in four seasons. Bowie will face the winner of Saturday night's game between Walter Johnson and Perry Hall in the state final, which will be played next week at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in Catonsville. The time and date of the game have not yet been determined.

Bowie took a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the game with a goal-scoring sequence that reminded fans of why they call soccer the “Beautiful Game.”

Junior center back Robert Lopez stepped up into the midfield to intercept a Severna Park pass, and he immediately split the defense with a well timed pass to a streaking Samuel Daniels.

One-on-one with Severna Park's goalkeeper, Daniels calmly delivered a shot into the lower right corner of the net.

Severna Park equalized five minutes before halftime off a 25-yard free kick. Senior defender Charlie Smith sent a curling ball across the face of the goal, and junior midfielder Cole Strong got a foot on it and redirected it home to make it 1-1.

To start the second half Bowie struck first, with Daniels getting his second goal, but 14 minutes later Severna Park freshman forward Daniel Kwon tied the game again.

With the score tied at 2-2, each team did a good job of stretching out the other's defense with long runs.

“I'm pleased with what we did,” said Bowie coach Richard Kirkland. “Our kids have worked hard, we ended up concentrating on putting it against their defense and isolating their offense.”

Bowie midfielder Joshua LeMaster would be the difference-maker.

With 19 minutes to play, LeMaster received a throw-in about 30 yards away from goal, made one move and sprinted towards the middle of the field. Nearing the top of the penalty box, LeMaster unleashed a breathtaking shot that whizzed past Severna Park's defenders and into the top right corner of goal to give Bowie a 3-2 lead.

“I haven't hit many like that, maybe one or two, but that was just beautiful,” said LeMaster.

Shortly after that, LeMaster made an impact again, but this time he played the role of provider. A lead pass by LeMaster sprung Kelvin Davis loose behind the Severna Park defense with only the goalkeeper to beat. Davis won the one-on-one battle, scoring the goal that eventually stood as the game-winner.

Severna Park got back within a goal with 13 minutes to play when senior Billy Zito converted a penalty shot. But the Falcons were unable to overcome LeMaster's five minutes of brilliance.

“Coach always tells us in practice that whenever the other team scores we have to play hard for the next five minutes after,” LeMaster said “The last three to four games in 10-minute spurts, that's where all our goals came from.”

Newburyport girls soccer WINS Stoneham to Wicked local Division 2 North title-

This is a story of two teams with completely different stories.

The Newburyport girls soccer team (17-2-3) has made great success throughout its existence as a program, but especially in the last five years, while those of Stoneham (15-2-5) entered Saturday the Division 2 North final of Lynn manning field as a virtual unknown to the pomp and circumstance of a game in mid November titled the ambitions of the State on the horizon.

"I was just hoping and praying that everything will work for us," said Gonnam coach. "At this stage of the season, you can't change anything, maybe some things our settings to customize the opposition, but for the most part are players.

"We have already played six scrimmages, 18 regular season games and four tournaments, competitions and so by this time the girls know what to do to win," Added Gonnam.

In football, winning starts with goal and Newburyport was reply with sophomore Lilly Donovan. The Clippers have allowed only nine goals this year, mainly as a result of Donovan's heroics.

In a shootout, the goalie is centre stage and Donovan ought to be above the game throughout eight rounds, against Stoneham. The Spartans struck a cross on the line, but Donovan struck with stores senior defender Kelsey Dunn and sophomore midfielder Claudio Molinaro to secure the Championship.

Aly Leahy, Karli brand, Hannah Martin, Sarah Casey, Jillian Whelan and Amy Sullivan scored shootout goals of Newburyport.

Susan O'Loughlin, Samantha Gendall, Danielle Phalon, Betsy Markman Albiani and Morgan for the Stoneham Havican enumerates to extend the shootout.

Both teams had to overcome with a firm after midnight wind who created havoc for all players, in particular, defenders have faced mother nature.

Anyone who felt the wind had the advantage, "said Stoneham coach Sharon Chapman, who has just completed its 22nd season.   "I thought we were playing in the second half, and the first overtime. But overall, it was a good game between two good teams. "

While the Spartans regroup hoping for another opportunity next year to ensure the title of the North, the Clippers will now be in the third State sectionals in the winner of the game Canton/Duxbury in Taunton Sunday morning.

WKU soccer team in Sun Belt title match - Bowling Green Daily News

After 110 minutes of scoreless play, the Western Kentucky soccer team defeated North Texas 4-3 on penalty kicks to advance to Saturday’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship game in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Senior goalkeeper Libby Stout made six saves in the game, including two saves in the shootout to send the Lady Toppers (13-6-2) to their second Sun Belt Tournament final in four years.

WKU controlled possession in the first overtime, keeping North Texas from taking a shot. Lindsay Williams had the lone shot of the period, but sent the ball over the goal and the game into a second overtime.

The Lady Toppers came close to the game winner in the second overtime, but shots by Courtney Rymer and Ali Stahlke were stopped by Jackie Kerestine in the 103rd minute. North Texas had one shot in the second overtime.

A header by Michelle Young went wide of the goal in the 108th minute, leading to a deciding penalty kick shootout for a spot in the championship game.

Stahlke, Williams, Kiersten Ottaway and Chrissy Tchoula all scored for WKU in penalty kicks, and Stout stopped the Mean Green’s final attempt to send the Lady Toppers to Saturday’s title match.

This is the third straight year that WKU has gone to penalty kicks in the Sun Belt Tournament and the first time the Lady Toppers have come out on top in the shootout.

WKU will face Florida International in the championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.

The second-seeded Panthers defeated third-seeded Denver 3-1 in Thursday’s first semifinal. FIU and the Lady Toppers played to a scoreless draw at the WKU Soccer Complex on Oct. 7.

COMMERCE CITY — Few teams have been able to crack the formidable defensive facade the Dakota Ridge girls soccer team has erected this season, especially when the Eagles are able to score the first goal of any given game.

Mountain Vista, however, is not your typical offensive team.

The Golden Eagles rallied from an early deficit by scoring three goals in the second half, including the go-ahead and insurance tallies just 48 seconds apart, to post a 3-1 win in the Class 5A state championship match Wednesday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

It was the first girls soccer title for Mountain Vista (17-0-2) since 2005 and fourth overall for coach Theresa Echtermeyer.

"I think this team, out of any team I've ever had, has had the most courage."

Dakota Ridge (16-2-2) took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Kelsey Loupee scored on a free kick from about 30 yards out.

The defensive-minded Eagles kept Mountain Vista at bay until sophomore Gabby Miranda finally broke through, launching a long-range blast that eluded Eagles goalie Haley Milhollan and tied the match at 1.

"Gabby has been a strong force for our team, and for her to pull that out totally brought our entire team's spirit up," Mountain Vista senior midfielder Bri Pugh said. "We finally were like, 'We actually have a chance to do this.' "

The match was angling toward overtime until Pugh, a University of Oregon recruit, took a lead pass and outraced a Dakota Ridge defender for her 11th goal of the season with 5:17 remaining.

Kortney Hix added an insurance goal less than a minute later.

Bri Pugh, an Oregon recruit, was the most dangerous player on the field during the Class 5A title match. Pugh provided the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute to lift Mountain Vista to its first girls soccer state title since 2005.
