Ex-FIFA Executive Says He Got World Cup TV Rights for $1 - BusinessWeek

Former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner said he got the World Cup television rights for Trinidad & Tobago for $1 after helping Sepp Blatter get elected president of the soccer ruling body.

Warner, who quit world soccer’s governing body in June after accusations of bribery, said today in a statement that he got the rights from FIFA in 1998 via a Mexican company and also acquired them for the 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions. He used the revenue from selling on the rights to develop the sport in the Caribbean, where he’s from, according to the statement.

Warner quit during a FIFA investigation into allegations about him and another vice president, Mohamed Bin Hamman. The pair was accused of giving Caribbean officials $40,000 in cash to gain support for Bin Hammam’s presidential campaign against Blatter. At the time, Warner denied wrongdoing and said he’d been “hung out to dry” after 30 years with FIFA.

Zurich-based FIFA said in an e-mail today “it will look into” Warner’s comments, and the organization’s London-based spokesman Brian Alexander declined to make any immediate response.

FIFA normally sells World Cup television rights directly to broadcasters, or sub-contracts companies to negotiate sales.

Warner said he refused to endorse Blatter in the June election even though he was offered the rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup for a nominal fee. He also alleged that he was offered other “inducements” to develop soccer in the region, including relaying turf at a stadium in Trinidad & Tobago and $1 million in grants, according to the statement.

Past Agreements

FIFA rescinded an agreement with International Media Content Ltd.’s SportsMax cable channel to broadcast the 2014 World Cup in the Caribbean after “only recently” becoming aware that a company owned by Warner negotiated the sale on behalf of the regional soccer association, the BBC reported Sept. 8, citing a FIFA letter to the association.

IMC had paid as much as $20 million for the rights to the 2010 and 2014 tournaments, the BBC said.

Hammam withdrew his candidacy in May, and Blatter was re- elected on June 1 as the only candidate. Hammam denies wrongdoing and is appealing a life ban from soccer at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Blatter in October announced plans to reform FIFA, which governs the sport and oversees the World Cup. The soccer showpiece tournament generates about $4 billion in television rights, sponsorship and other income.

Agassa: World Cup triumphs them all-Fifa.com

For Kossi Agassagoalkeeper, 2012 is already shaping up to be an important year. His club, Reims, are seemingly on course for promotion to Ligue 1, while he also dreams of a return to the FIFA World Cup ™ Togowith.

Reims lie second in Ligue 2 and have their sights set on rejoining the top Franceflight, where they enjoyed one of the most successful spells in their history. In fact, in the postwar period, Reims won the National Championship six times and twice finished runner-up to Real Madrid in the Cup fans. Some European UEFA might believe that these exploits ever will be matched, but a return to the elite would certainly be a step in the right direction.

"We're not playing for promotion," FIFA.comAgassa said. "Our goal is to ensure that we avoid relegation as quickly as possible. Then we'll see if we are not in a good position. "

Recent performances Reims were nothing if not encouraging, but with half season still at play, players are understandably anxious to keep our feet on the ground. "The club is restructuring gradually," explained Agassa, who arrived in Europe in 2002.

"It is my fourth year here [in Reims] and really I noticed a change. Everyone, at every level, is trying to do everything possible to help us thrive in French football. Every player wants to play at the highest level. "

At the age of 33 years, Agassa believes still has the ability to shine in Ligue 1 and backing up those claims with some fine running awesome monitor Reims in 2010/11 Francede Coupe. After knocking at Montpellier, la Ligue 2 side defeated Rennes in a hilarious meeting with saving two penalties Agassa. Reims eventually fell to Nice in the quarterfinals, but the Cup run provided a taste of success and only increased their desire to return to the top level of French football.

2006 dream memories, 2014
In addition to push can promote Reims, spring 2012 will also be a crucial period for Agassa internationally, with the second round of African qualifying for Brazil 2014 that looms on the horizon. Togo exceeded the Guinea-Bissau to seal their progress to the second round, and after a few years, west Africans can finally dare to dream again.

"Togolese football is in a transition phase," said former goalkeeper for Etoile Filante. "We are preparing for future challenges, such as the Tin in 2013 and 2014 World Championships. We couldn't make the can in 2012, but sometimes you need a year as you bounce back stronger ".

Emmanuel Adebayorback to the national set-up is an encouraging sign Togofor, as explained Agassa. "He is the biggest star of the team, and we missed him during his absence," said the goalkeeper, who has 52 caps to his name.

"We are now back on track and we can aim higher, we were able to over the past two years. Emmanuel and I are among the players of the senior team. I am one of the oldest and we are there to guide the younger players, whose task will be to bring the national team in years to come. "

Agassa was No1 in Togocourse of the inaugural World Cup campaign in 2006, so he is well aware of the opportunity that lies before him and his teammates. "It was an honor to play at the World Cup," he said. "Our performance Franceagainst, particularly in the first half, is a great memory for me."

France eventual finalists won that first round tie 2-0, but Agassa undoubtedly will remember with fondness the match. Pulled by a save of the tournament, nullify David Trezeguet from point-blank range after keeping out initial effort of Florent Malouda.

"I've never played in the Champions League or League of Europe, but I can say that I played in a World Cup, and that is a competition that trumps all," said Agassa, clearly excited by the prospect of returning to the world stage Togowith. "Once you've tasted only want one thing, namely to go back there again. We need to do so as we can perhaps in our qualification and give us a strong possibility of experiencing it all again. "

FIFA said it was looking into Warner’s statement.

Warner was suspended by FIFA in connection with corruption allegations around the 2011 presidential campaign. He resigned from all football functions before a final FIFA ruling.

Warner was accused of having organized a meeting in which Blatter’s opponent for the presidency, Mohammed bin Hammam of Qatar, allegedly gave Caribbean football officials cash to vote him his favour.

Bin Hammam was banned for life from football by FIFA. He and Warner have protested their innocence.

Warner said that he and Bin Hammam in the past played critical roles in Blatter being elected FIFA boss in a bitter 1998 campaign against Sweden’s Lennart Johansson and then being re-elected later.

Russia proud to be hosting FIFA World Cup™ - Fifa.com

One year on from the award of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ to Russia it appears that positivity surrounding the tournament is already at a high level. With seven years to go until the FIFA World Cup™ in Russia kicks off, FIFA’s latest global market research investigation looked to shed light on the thoughts, hopes and aspirations of the Russian people at this early stage in the preparation process.

The study reveals that 51 per cent of the Russian population is aware that the FIFA World Cup will be held in Russia in 2018. This awareness level rises to 61 per cent among those interested in football. This figure can be expected to rise in the coming years as 2018 approaches and the nation begins to turn its attention to the impending arrival of world football’s flagship event.

The research also highlights that Russians have faith in the steps taken by the LOC and Russian Government in preparation for the tournament. Of those aware that the event will take place in Russia, 74 per cent believe that it will prove to be a great success.

A total 43 per cent of the Russian population is either ‘interested’ or ‘very interested’ in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This interest can also be expected to rise in the coming years, particularly driven by the improvements in the country’s infrastructure and construction of new stadiums.

There is a strong sense of pride among Russians in the fact that they are hosting the tournament. 61 per cent state that they are proud that Russia is hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2018. The tournament is also seen as an opportunity to portray Russia in a positive light and change long held perceptions. There is a belief held by 54 per cent of the population that hosting the tournament will improve the image of their country abroad.

Previous research shows that Russians have every reason to be optimistic about hosting the FIFA World Cup. The 2010 edition of the event delivered on the expectations of the South African people. Despite pre-event press reports doubting South Africa’s readiness to host the event, the South African people themselves were extremely confident that the host nation would be ready and that the competition would be a success, leaving a lasting legacy.

Independent research conducted for FIFA subsequent to the 2010 FIFA World Cup vindicated South Africa’s optimism. 83 per cent of South Africans say that they are benefitting and will continue to benefit in the long term from the country’s hosting of the event. Further, 94 per cent believe that the event improved the image of South Africa with foreigners and has as a result strengthened their tourism industry. It is also widely agreed (by 91 per cent of the population) that hosting the FIFA World Cup has had a long term impact on the country’s infrastructure such as roads, public transport and telecommunications.

The FIFA logo is seen outside the FIFA headquarters during to the FIFA Executive Committee Meeting on October 20, 2011 in Zurich, Switzerland. Sports Business Journal reports that Fox has won rights for the next two World Cups.

Fox agreed to pay more than $400 million for the two-tournament package, according to an official familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity.

ESPN paid $100 million to screen the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2014 event in Brazil.

Telemundo was awarded the Spanish-language deal by also defeating a rights holder, Univision, for football's showpiece tournament. Telemundo is owned by NBC Universal.

The contracts cover tournament finals in all FIFA competitions from 2015-22, also giving Fox the women's World Cup in 2015 and '19. It also secured all radio rights.

"We are truly honored for FIFA to award the Fox Sports Media Group these extremely important rights," chairman David Hill said in a statement. "The FIFA World Cup and Women's World Cup are two of the world's biggest competitions. It is our privilege to be entrusted with these rights in the United States."

FIFA did not disclose the value of the deals.

Fox adds football's biggest event to a portfolio of rights that includes the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League and Italy's Serie A.

ESPN, which holds the English-language rights for the 2014 tournament in Brazil, earlier acknowledged defeat in its 2018-2022 bid.

"We made a disciplined bid that would have been both valuable to FIFA and profitable for our company, while continuing to grow our unprecedented coverage of the World Cup and Women's World Cup events," ESPN said in a statement. "We were aggressive while remaining prudent from a business perspective."

ESPN also broadcast the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after getting a two-tournament package with 2014 rights.

ESPN paid $100 million and Univision paid $325 million for its 2010-2014 deal, making the U.S. FIFA's most lucrative national market.

The 2018 World Cup will be held in Russia, and the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

FIFA made the decisions after the networks submitted bids at its Swiss headquarters on Wednesday and Thursday.

Spanish-language radio rights went to Futbol de Primera Radio.

FIFA earns about 90 percent of its revenue from broadcasting, sponsorship and marketing deals tied to the World Cup.

The world governing body of football calculates it earned $2.4 billion in broadcast sales worldwide just for the 2010 tournament.

Qatar defeated the U.S. in the final round of voting for the 2022 World Cup in a five-country contest last December.

FIFA announced in March that it already sold $1.7 billion worth of 2018-2022 broadcast rights to the Middle East and parts of Asia and Latin America. The deals were 90 percent more valuable than the same territories earned for 2010-2014, FIFA said.

FIFA World Cup tickets on sale in 2013 - Fifa.com

When it comes to the FIFA World Cup™, the issue of ticketing is always of chief importance among fans. For that reason, FIFA invited a number of Brazilian journalists to a round-table discussion on 20 October in Zurich, where they had the chance to pose questions to FIFA Marketing Director Thierry Weil and Executive Chairman of MATCH AG Jaime Byrom. FIFA.com rounds up the highlights.

Thierry Weil, FIFA Marketing Director and member of FIFA Ticketing AG
On ticket sales
Ticketing is a very complex operation. There are going to be an estimated 3.3 million tickets available, although we are yet to confirm a precise number. That will only be possible once all the stadiums are ready and we know which seats cannot be made available for purchase, such as those with an obstructed view. We also need to organise the Fan Fests together with the host cities. There are going to be plenty of additional activities for fans in 2014 too.

On scheduling
The sale of FIFA World Cup tickets will begin after the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013, probably towards the end of August 2013. Tickets for the Confederations Cup will go on general sale after the draw at the end of 2012. We made this decision in order to prevent confusion between the two events among fans.

On procedure
The first sales phase will be a lottery in which fans can apply for tickets, which are then allocated via random draw. Everyone can take part and will have an equal chance of securing tickets. The majority of tickets will be sold through FIFA.com, the official FIFA World Cup website. Similarly to South Africa 2010, there will also be ticket outlets in Brazil for local fans who do not have access to the internet. Furthermore, we will be working with local organisations to ensure we are able to reach every fan.

On pricing
We know that Brazilians are passionate about football. We are in discussions with the government and the Local Organising Committee to ensure that every social group has an equal chance of seeing World Cup matches live. It's our aim to make it possible for anyone to attend matches, from wealthier fans to those with lower incomes. We believe a large proportion of tickets will go to Brazilians. Fans are of utmost importance to us. If the fans in the stadiums are happy, it'll be a fantastic World Cup.

Jaime Byrom, Executive Chairman of MATCH Hospitality
The early signs are that we're going to be overwhelmed by the demand for tickets, which is very promising. The World Cup in Brazil is still three years away, but I can already say that the number of requests so far surpasses any previous World Cup for which we've been responsible for hospitality and ticketing. We will be taking a fresh approach to hospitality for Brazil 2014 and will be introducing a brand new product. Aside from team and city-specific tickets, there will also be a package which covers all the main stadiums.

ESPN will televise the 2014 event in Brazil, said in a statement: "we have a disciplined tender which would be so valuable to FIFA and profitable for our company, and continues to grow our unprecedented coverage from the World Cup and the women's World Cup events. We were aggressive while remaining prudent from the perspective of the enterprise.

"ASK.COM remains committed to presenting the sport of football at the highest level in our platforms to cover the European Football Championship, Spain Segunda Liga, La Liga, MLS and other top leagues and tournaments, including the World Cup 2014 in Brazil."

Fox adds more incidents of football in a portfolio of rights which includes the Champions League, Uefa Cup and the Italian Serie a.

FIFA confident of Russia's will to deliver at 2018 World Cup - insideworldfootball (blog)

October 11 - FIFA general secretary Jérôme Valcke has praised the enthusiasm and commitment of Russia after the first meeting of world football's governing body and the 2018 World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC).

During the meeting, held in Moscow and chaired by Valcke and LOC chair Vitaly Mutko, Russia's Sports Minister and a member of FIFA's ruling Executive Committee, it was announced that the host cities for the tournament would be confirmed in 12 months' time, rather than 2013 as originally planned.

LOC chief executive Alexey Sorokin set out the procedure for deciding the host cities of the tournament, with those in contention now taking part in the first candidate host city workshop as the process gets underway.

Currently 15 stadiums are in the running across 13 cities, predominantly in the west of the country, with the intention being to select a maximum of 13 venues in 12 cities.

Russia faces a number of infrastructural challenges in the build up to the 2018 tournament, particularly given that the host cities are likely to be spread out, like Brazil 2014, over a far larger area than normal.

To help combat this issue a high-speed rail line is being planned to ensure that fans can get between cities easily.

Transport networks in Moscow, particularly its surrounding highways, which are frequently heavily congested, need improvements completed before they are fit to host the World Cup.

Russia will also have to construct most of the new stadia from scratch, with just two of the proposed stadia existing already - the Luzhniki, which hosted the 1980 Summer Olympic Games, and the Dynamo, which is the home of Dynamo Moscow.

Both grounds will undergo renovation before 2018, whilst the Olympic Stadium in Sochi and the new Zenit St Petersburg ground are both currently being built, but the other 11 possible venues would all need to be built from scratch.

russia loc_meet_fifa_11-10-111
Mutko also confirmed that a World Cup law was already being drawn up in preparation for introduction to the State Duma at the start of 2012.

The news will delight FIFA after their wrangling this month with Brazil over their delays and disagreements over the precise details of the law ahead of their hosting of the 2014 World Cup.

"We are pleased to announce that the legislative process for the dedicated FIFA World Cup law, the legal foundation for the successful staging of the FIFA World Cup, has begun already," said Mutko.

"The FIFA World Cup law will be introduced to the State Duma by the Government in the first quarter of 2012.

"In this context, I would once again confirm the Russian government's commitment to fulfil all their guarantees in preparation for the tournament."

Valcke was delighted with the spirit shown by the Organising Committee, and said: "It is amazing to see the great enthusiasm, partnership and level of commitment by the LOC and the Russian government at this stage.

"Now we just have to ensure that we keep up this working spirit as there is a lot to be accomplished in Russia.

"But I can reassure you of the full support of the FIFA team."

Sinclair, LeBlanc top roster of women's World Cup Canada-CBC.ca

Two years after Carolina Morace assumed the post of transforming women's soccer team Canada, players are ready to show the world how much they've improved.

Prolific striker Christine Sinclair and 21-player roster veteran goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc headline Morace of Canada announced Thursday for the women's FIFA World Cup which kicks off next week in Germany.

"Personally, I never felt better heading into a major tournament, I never felt this well prepared and I think that goes for the entire team," Sinclair said in a conference call from Rome.

Canada, ranked higher than Sixth, play the opening game of the tournament against No. 2 in Germany, the two-time defending World Cup, on 26 June in Berlin.

Canadians entering the tournament as defending champions they don't concede CONCACAF — a goal in five games en route to claiming the title — and boast a record near flawless 10-1-2 in matches this year.

Players say they owe their success to Morace. Since he was hired in 2009, the former Italian national team star took a team famous for his love for the long ball under former coach even Pellerud and implemented a technical hold-style of play.

Morace, who last week agreed with the Canadian team through the 2012 Olympics in London, said she is proud of how well his team has made the transition.

"What I told them the other day is: I think we have two strengths," said Morace. "One is the organization that we have on the field and the other is the players to go to the wall, if we want something. "

"Obviously we're more cohesive as a group," said LeBlanc. "The time we did together soccer players smarter, smartest and obviously we are fitter, stronger, we feel more than a group than ever before.

"Everything we have learned, that is going to be invaluable come into the World Cup."

Other opening-round group matches against France Canada is no. 7 on 30 June in Bochum and Nigeria 27-Rank, Jul 5th at Dresden.

"Obviously having to play in the first place is very exciting, most people consider them to be the top team in the world and the tournament's Favorites, they're going to be a very tough team to beat," said Sinclair. "France is a very good team of up-and-coming. And then Nigeria, are a very athletic team.

"We definitely got lured into a group very, very difficult, so we're going to have three of our best games we've had yet to achieve."

Valcke confirms that sent e-mails to FIFA World Cup-RTE. ie

FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke has confirmed that an email you sent to FIFA Vice-president Jack Warner, suggesting the 2022 FIFA World Cup was ' bought ' from Qatar was genuine.

The email was made public by an angry Warner soon after he was banned from all football related activity by the Ethics Committee of FIFA.

At the time the email was sent on May 18, Mohamed Bin Hammam of Qatar, President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) was still standing against Sepp Blatter for President-but he was also banned by the Ethics Committee on Sunday on charges of alleged corruption along with Warner.

Bin Hammam withdrew his candidacy for President a few hours before the Ethics Committee met Sunday.

Warner showed the email from Valcke to Reuters news agency, which said: ' for MBH (Bin Hammam), I never understood why he was running.

"If He really thought he had a chance or simply be a so far to express how much he dislikes most ACC (Blatter). Or thought that you can buy FIFA as they bought the WC (World Cup).

Valcke has confirmed the authenticity of the email.

It was a private email and we will discuss it. Sent me an email asking if I want (Bin Hammam to run), said that I should ask Bin Hammam to pull out, '' he said.

Valcke said Warner had released only selected parts of the email, and denied claims from Warner and Bin Hammam which he had influenced the Ethics Committee against them.

This is the first time I met the President of the Ethics Committee was yesterday to 5 hours before we went to the press conference. All I have not had any contact with anyone, '' said the Frenchman.

Meanwhile, UEFA President Michel Platini defended Blatter against other credits from Warner.

Such an accusation was that Blatter had offered to pay $ 1 million to the Federation CONCACAF (North, Central America and Caribbean) without permission of the Finance Committee.

Warner said Sunday that Platini was annoyed about this, but UEFA President told reporters Monday: '' it's not like this, it was a joke with me and Mr Blatter.

«He can give projects that he wants to give. I joke, I said "but Sepp this has not been accepted by the Committee"-but he can give many projects of many national associations.

The President can give one or two projects to national associations-which has its own budget and he can give to a Confederation and then must be approved by the Executive Committee of course next time. '

Platini said he feared that there might be a repeat of the 1999 FIFA Congress in Los Angeles when the Asian delegates walked in protest at the number of places in the World Cup, which they were earmarked for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Platini said: ' Asia ' 99 left, I don't know if they'll once again. I believe that the election (FIFA President) (1st June) will go on, but I don't know. "

Blatter insists that he is not worried about the threat of another Asian boycott.

"I've already had to deal with that once and Congress continued. They will be there, I'm sure, '' he said.

Exclusive: Collins Urges World Cup 2022 France if allegations of Qatar have shown-insideworldfootball (blog)

 By Andrew Warshaw

May 15 – one of the British parliamentary corruption scandal exposed last football urged FIFA to stage a were if it is proven that hosts World Cup 2022 Qatar bribed two senior officials.

Damian Collins said governing body of world football should seriously consider a replacement ballot if there is evidence that the firm's original vote last December was rigged in any way.

After receiving written notice from the newspaper The Sunday Times, Collins used parliamentary privilege to reveal the last week of culture, Media and Sport Select Committee hearing that 1.5 million (£ 917,000) was allegedly paid by Qatar to two members of the FIFA vote, African football Chief Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma from Côte d'Ivoire.

Both continued to vote for Qatar, which has won the right to host the 2022 World Cup by a landslide in the biggest upset ever offered in the sport in the world.

A total of six members of the Executive Committee of FIFA are now in the dock that following former England 2018 bid notable statements of President Lord Triesman – the same parliamentary hearing that four other powerbrokers, including most senior FIFA Vice-President Jack Warner tried to sweeteners in exchange for voting for England.

Warner asked presumably for 2.5 million pounds (4 million dollars) to build a centre of education in his native Trinidad, while Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay presumably wanted to knighthood.

All the accused have vehemently denied any wrongdoing, but FIFA and the English Football Association have launched separate investigations is testimony of Triesman and revelations about Qatar.

It is understood there may be Difficulty Triesman comments for lack of evidence and verification concerning the allegations of the success of Qatar who are coming suddenly under scrutiny the majority.

FIFA Ethics Committee has already suspended two senior Exco, Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii, following initial damning revelations in cash for votes in the Sunday Times.

Both were prevented from voting for the host the World Cup in 2018 and 2022 in December.

Collins says that FIFA must take into account a revote if there is sufficient evidence to throw the book at Hatayou and Anouma.

"What you need to do is clear FIFA their names or, if they are proven guilty, the Act, said Collins.

"That applies to all six men, but if there is a violation of the rules above Qatar, will mean the reopening of the trial offer 2022.

"I don't see how you can avoid if the allegations are proved that a country winning broke the rules in terms of contacts with members of the FIFA Executive Committee."
