On Monday, the city of Curitiba has unveiled the latest innovation in transportation: hybrid buses consisting of an electric motor with a biodiesel one. Buses will find their way onto the streets of the city next year and will be fully operational by the date of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ gets underway.

Three of the first five lines where the new buses pass the Baixada da Arena, one of the world finals, and the next year, 60 of them will be operating on the streets of the city, the capital of the State of Parana.

Their introduction will have a positive impact on the environment, helping to reduce emissions from fuel consumption and 90 percent of the 30 per cent.

Electric motors and biodiesel can be operated separately or in tandem with electric used to start the bus and the aid which reached a speed of about 20 km/h and generate energy when the brakes.

The biodiesel engine comes into operation at higher speeds. When the brake deceleration energy charge the batteries, and when the vehicle stops in traffic, at bus stops or traffic lights, the biodiesel engine shuts down.

"It is an outcome that consolidates the progress made in the city, especially in transport and development, where respect for the environment is a focal point," said the Mayor of the city, Luciano Ducci. "The new buses are to help visitors who come to watch the World Cup in Curitiba to get around the city."
