Germany wants to survey Qatar 2022 bid campaign-insideworldfootball (blog)

 By Duncan Mackay in Zurich

1 June-Germany has called for the circumstances that resulted in Qatar, having won the World Cup 2022 to be investigated as the controversy surrounding the decision to award the tournament to the tiny Gulf State refuses to subside.

Theo Zwanziger, the President of the German Football Association (DFB), made his call on the eve of him replacing Franz Beckenbauer, as a member of FIFA's ruling Executive Committee.

"There is a considerable degree of suspicion that one cannot simply sweep, and I expect that this World Cup award in these circumstances must be looked at again," Merkel told German television.

"I'd like to first comment on how that should be done when I know more about the facts.

"As I said, I am a stranger and was not a member of the Executive branch."

Questions were raised again on the success of the campaign of Qatar earlier this week when FIFA Vice-President Jack Warner reacted to his suspension by releasing the details of an e-mail conversation between himself and the FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke has appeared to suggest that they "lead" the World Cup.

Qatar always angrily have denied they have done something wrong before the vote here in December, when they beat, Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States but Zwanziger believes that credits must be looked at to ensure that the creditability of FIFA is not corrupt in the long term.

"If FIFA behaves the way that people expect, which is clearly taking action against this cancerous tumor of corruption, then there is no need for these concerns," said Merkel, a lawyer by profession.

"None of us could have imagined this scandal.

"There is no end to the suspicion that falls on the FIFA Executive members.

"The task is now to shed light in a certain way, punish the guilty parties and to develop mechanisms which prevent something similar from ever happening again."
