The Des Moines Menace will now open for ... the Des Moines Menace.

The soccer franchise announced Wednesday that it is adding a women?s team for the 2012 season.

"I think it just adds that much value to the Menace soccer experience," said Adam Small, Menace director of operations. "It's exciting."

The new team will become the sixth member of Women's League Soccer, joining the Chicago Breeze, the Cincinnati Lady Saints, FC Indiana, Fort Wayne and the Indiana Invaders.

The men's squad competes in the 64-team United Soccer League's Premier Development League.

Kevin Schalk, who works as the Menace?s youth development director, was tabbed as the women?s coach.

"It's long overdue," Schalk said. "I think we have a great presence of Division I programs in the state. I think it's not only going to benefit the Menace as an organization but really the schools themselves with the best players playing high-caliber soccer for the summer."

The women's team will open for the men?s team for home events at Valley Stadium, giving fans a chance to catch two matches in one night.

"I think that it helps us get the word out," Schalk said.

Schalk said the news of the women?s team has generated interest from possible players from colleges throughout the state over the last few months.

"I'm open to bringing in 25-30 players, and I don't think that should be a problem," Schalk said.

Small said plans haven't been finalized on ticket prices or game times for the doubleheaders. He said fans would be able to purchase one ticket that would admit them to both matches.

Small said fans have been asking for a women?s team in recent years.

"We have great soccer fans who like seeing the game played at a high level here at Iowa," Small said.

Schalk said he has big plans for the new squad.

"As we continue to grow and develop the program, I would hope that we would have a strong enough following to play solo. I do see that down the road."

Major League Soccer in Elk Grove?

Well, why not?

A group led by former Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, who sits on the board of soccer's national governing body, is exploring the possibility of landing an MLS franchise for the suburb.

One of Núñez's partners in the project, Sacramento attorney Dick Hyde, said Tuesday the idea is in its early stages.

"I wouldn't characterize it as a long shot, but it's an endeavor that's in its infancy," said Hyde, who was part of a group that tried to bring the MLS to Sacramento a decade ago. "I think Elk Grove is probably a really good spot for soccer."

Elk Grove officials are ready to at least look into the concept. The City Council tonight is expected to approve a negotiating agreement with Núñez's group, Northern California Soccer LLC.

Landing a team wouldn't come cheap. Based on recent history, an MLS stadium can cost upward of $100 million. And team owners would have to pay the MLS a fee of at least $40 million for an expansion team, said league spokesman Dan Courtemanche.

There are plenty of other hurdles. Elk Grove, saddled with foreclosures and an unfinished mega-mall, hasn't been spared the impact of the region's weak economy. Sacramento is struggling to hold onto the NBA's Kings, and it's unclear whether a region with 11.4 percent unemployment would be capable anytime soon of supporting big-time soccer.

For that matter, putting a team in the Sacramento area isn't high on the MLS' list of priorities. The league just added its 19th team, in Montreal, and would like to have a second team in New York. Beyond that, it isn't focused on additional expansion and doesn't have any teams looking to relocate, Courtemanche said.

Still, he wouldn't rule out expansion several years down the road and said soccer has a solid foundation in the Sacramento area.

"Sacramento is certainly a market that has supported the sport," he said.

Núñez and MLS Commissioner Don Garber sit on the board of U.S. Soccer, the sport's national governing federation. Núñez couldn't be reached for comment, and Courtemanche said he doesn't know whether the former Assembly speaker had contacted Garber about a franchise.

The agreement between Núñez's group and Elk Grove wouldn't commit either side to do anything besides talk, look for a stadium site and see if a financial deal can be worked out, said City Manager Laura Gill. Núñez's group wouldn't talk to anyone but Elk Grove for the next five years.

Asked about the likelihood of getting a team, Gill said, "I don't know, to be frank. But we have an entity that has an interest."

The MLS scouted Sacramento in the mid-1990s, when the league was getting off the ground and looking for markets. The city was passed over.

Then, in 1999, a group including Hyde and former Sacramento Kings owner Gregg Lukenbill was given development rights on a 100-acre parcel of city-owned land near what is now called Power Balance Pavilion.

The group looked at building a baseball stadium but also hosted a delegation from the MLS.

"If we designed on paper a city that would be perfect for our league, Sacramento has exactly what we want," league executive John Ertmann said at the time. But the idea went nowhere, and the city cut ties with the development group.

Hyde said he's more optimistic this time, largely because the MLS has become a success.

The league drew an average of 17,872 fans a game this year, slightly more than the NBA and NHL, according to the Sporting News. The most successful team, the Seattle Sounders, drew an average 38,496 fans per game.

"This potentially has some life to it," said Elk Grove City Councilman Gary Davis.

Major League Soccer next year to shining-Long Beach Press-Telegram

The best chance for an athletic club based in Los Angeles to win a National Championship anytime soon as occurs today in suburban Carson.

This would be Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy, who crowd Favorites, in order to overcome the Houston Dynamo and argue that their first championship Title since 2005.

With USC ruled from the postseason because of NCAA sanctions, the Nuggets moribund due to the exclusion of the NBA and the Pirates dealt with the SOAP Opera off-the-field, it must be able to attract Southern California Football sports spotlight.

Never before has the sport-and Galaxy-was ready for a year when MLS Cup 2011 starts tonight on ESPN and Galavision.

The last time Major League Soccer Championship game took place in Carson of Home Depot Center barely caused a minor ripple in Southern California.

It helped that the game 2008 began at noon between a modest team from far-off New York and small-market Columbus in the depths of the worst economic crisis since the great depression.

What kind of Party atmosphere is that?

But still, this was MLS Cup, domestic football version of the Super Bowl.

However, the tickets were sold on the secondary market for $ 6, much lower than their nominal value. Sponsors, media and fans were almost invisible. And happy ignorance of you fan casual sport regarding the MLS was endemic.

TV ratings, revenue and membership is all about recovery, such as young hipsters discover more and more a sport with a buzz Insider popular via Twitter and blogs.

More media credentials were issued this year and events organized by the League sponsors than in any other MLS Cup game.

In August, MLS and NBC announced a new $ 10 million, three-year agreement that will see games telecast this year about the new network of NBC Sports and parent network. This is an important step for the Fox Soccer Channel which shows little-known today, the majority of MLS games.

Women's soccer falls in league game to Amherst - Colby News

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby women's soccer team had a small victory by becoming scoring just the third goal against unbeaten Amherst College all season, but the Jeffs pulled away in the second half for a 5-1 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday.
Sarah Duffy (Fairfield, Conn.) had two goals and one assist and teammate Kathryn Nathan (Pembroke, Mass.) added one goal and two assists for the eighth-ranked Jeffs.
Amherst is 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference heading into Sunday's 12:30 p.m. game at Bowdoin College, while the Mules fall to 5-5-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the league. Colby will entertain Hamilton College at 11 a.m. Sunday in another conference game.
Amherst had two goals in a span of 1:21 to take a 2-0 lead. Nathan played a free kick to Mel Stier (Deerfield, Mass.), who sent a cross to Jill Kochanek (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for a header goal at 17:39.
Nathan picked up a second quick assist when her feed sent Duffy for a breakaway goal at 19 minutes.
The Jeffs took a 3-0 lead at 5:15 of the second half when Elizabeth Ludlow (Huntington, N.Y.) scored off a cross from Duffy.
The Mules stayed in the game, though, when Sam Merriweather (Los Altos, Calif.) was sent in on a nice pass by Alex Yorke (Chicago, Ill.) for Colby's goal at 56:43. Hamilton and Eastern Connecticut are the only other teams to score a goal against Amherst.
The Jeffs bounced back quickly and made it a three-goal game again when Nathan scored off a free kick just 2:56 after the Colby goal. Duffy followed up with her second goal about two minutes later.
Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn.) played 80 minutes in goal and Claire Bennett (Westfield, N.J.) did the last 10 for Amherst. Emily Brook (Duxbury, Mass.) stopped nine shots for Colby.

New London Football League joins forces with Hewitt-Appleton Post Crescent

A British invasion involving a soccer ball has come to London News.

The New Youth Soccer Association and the football club in London and Gainesville have agreed to become a satellite clubs of FC Everton football club of Wisconsin.

The latter is based in Bangor and is an official partner of the Everton football club based in Liverpool in the Fa Barclays Premier League.

Animation is essentially a merge. The clubs new London and Edinburg will start wearing uniforms Hewitt-style with blue and white colors Royal club s and will receive support services from Everton FC of Wisconsin. London's new Club will now be known as Everton FC of the Wisconsin-New London.

IT s a great agreement, said Renee Sullivan, a New Hampshire resident and President of Everton FC of Wisconsin. The programmes would remain a somewhat different, but we re really a big club. What we re really concentrating our resources. Just grow football in the region and offers more to most children across the board.

Everton FC, Wisconsin is the first full year of operation and consists of around 70 players. With the addition of satellite clubs, Everton now has more than 600 players under the umbrella.

I think people were a little skeptical at first because we were new and wondered if you're going to be around long-term, Sullivan said. But we ve just merged with two groups that have been around 15 and 17 years, so a lot of stability is provided by merging these two clubs.

Hewitt will offer the clubs two satellite program, training-mentoring coaches and is expected to have an instructor available to work with the satellite clubs on a weekly basis. It will also assist in assigning referees.

What won t change is the seasonal schedule. New London and Edinburg clubs will continue to play in the spring and summer. Everton FC, Wisconsin is an annual football program.

According to Sullivan, the League dues for new London and Edinburg clubs under the umbrella of the Houston Rockets will increase, but it will be a slight increase.

We feel we re Britain's youth football in the region and will deserve, he said.

As an example of the benefits you will receive the satellite clubs Flamengo, Sullivan said that efforts to send one of Everton FC Wisconsin boys teams in Jamaica for a series of games. If required additional players, Arsenal FC of Wisconsin will offer an opportunity to New London and Gainesville players.

Euhardy, a catcher, went 1-for-3 at the plate for the red team, which fell 6-1 decision in white in a competition part 2.

Gold Cup: MAS say you have learned the lesson of Jamaica-Major League Soccer

The US national team continued preparations for Sunday’s Gold Cup quarterfinal with a heavy training session on Friday morning.

After a relaxed day on Thursday that saw only nine players train at the RFK Stadium Auxiliary Fields, the entire available contingent hit the field for a more rigorous practice.

With just two days to go until the knockout game against the Jamaicans, the team was ready to move on from the tournament’s group stage and improve.

“The first round is always about coming through,” midfielder Michael Bradley said after Thursday’s training. “You don’t get style points. It’s all about just taking it one game at a time, and after three games put yourself in a position to be in the quarterfinal. We’ve done that, we’ve learned from some things along the way.”

The team hopes it has learned enough in an underwhelming group-stage performance to prepare for a power-packed Jamaica team on Sunday (3 pm ET, Fox Soccer).

“We have a job to do now, and I think we’ve prepared well and we’ll be ready for Jamaica,” said defender Steve Cherundolo. “We know we haven’t played our best soccer yet and we’re hungry and motivated to do that.”

Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan were both absent on Friday, having left earlier in the week to each attend a sibling’s wedding. A US Soccer spokesman confirmed that the duo will be flying via private transportation to Texas and California, respectively, and are scheduled to fly back east Saturday night.

Captain Carlos Bocanegra didn’t think it would affect the team’s preparations for the game against Jamaica.

“They’re two really important players on our team,” Bocanegra said. “In an ideal situation, if they were here, it’d be great. They’re professionals, we’re all professionals, we’re preparing the same way with them or without them, and come Sunday, we’re all going to be ready to go in the same direction and fight for each other.”

GOODSON COMING HOME

Sunday’s game will be a homecoming for defender Clarence Goodson. A native of nearby Alexandria, Va., and a product of the University of Maryland, he fielded 18 ticket requests for the day and is looking forward to playing in front of some familiar faces.

“Any time I can come back here and play in front of my hometown and family and friends, it’s obviously a great occasion,” he told reporters after training. “Put the quarterfinal of the Gold Cup on top of that, it makes it that much more special.”

900 volunteers sought for Youth Football League news-daily newspaper

"The commitment by the community, Chamber of Commerce, parks and recreation Football Club, and Murfreesboro Murfreesboro made an easy choice when evaluating positions on offer," said long. "Siegel Soccer complex and Miller will Coliseum are excellent places for this event."

Local restaurants, Hotels, retail shops and others will benefit from the more than 10,000 visitors, consisting of players, coaches, teams and tournament officials and their families, when traveling to tournaments in six days. Visitors in and around Murfreesboro will book an estimated 10,000 nights in Hotels.

US Youth Soccer State champions and select wildcards, U-14 through U-19 teams of boys and girls aged from 12 member associations, including the host Tennessee State Youth Soccer Association will participate in the event.

Other member associations represented include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and South Texas.

Regional winners the U-14 through U-19 boys and girls brackets will win berths for the 2011 MAS Youth Football National Championship July 26-31 to reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix.
