Seattle Sounders again lead MLS in attendance - SportingNews.com

Seattle sure does love soccer. With the club expecting more than 62,000 for Saturday night's regular-season home finale, the Sounders again will set a league record for attendance.

The Sounders, with more than 39,000 fans per home game this season, had an average attendance of all but five Major League Baseball teams, according to The Seattle Times. And that mark would rank seventh in the English Premier League and sixth in Spain's La Liga and Italy's Serie A, the newspaper reports.

“Nobody could have imagined that anything could have been like this with this club,” said goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who grew up in nearby Olympia, Wash. “I couldn’t imagine that when I came home that the city, the entire Pacific Northwest, would become this. I’m just honored and proud that it has.”

GM Adrian Hanauer said he was optimistic the city would support an MLS franchise. Still, what has happened in its three years of existence is stunning. The club's original budget called for a goal of 8,000 season tickets. Well, in Year 3, the season-ticket list was capped just shy of 32,000.

“It is a bit surreal,” Hanauer said via the league's website.
