PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored a career-high three goals, while freshman Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I.) added one goal and two assists to lead the Providence College men's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Seton Hall Saturday afternoon at Glay Field. With the win, the Friars improved to 7-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates are now 4-8-2 overall and 0-5-0 in league action. It marked the most goals scored by the Friars since last season when they defeated Saint Peter's, 6-2, in the NCAA Tournament on November 18.
Davis gave the Friars an early 1-0 lead when he stole and errant back pass, maneuvered his way around the Seton Hall goalkeeper and tapped the ball into the empty net in the sixth minute. Providence addedtwo goals late in the second half to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission. Junior Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored from 10 yards out in the 41st minute, while Ugarte added another goal with 13 seconds remaining in the half.
Max Garcia pulled Seton Hall to within 3-1 when he converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute. However, the Friars scored three goals in a span of 9:31 to seal the victory. Senior Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) scored his first of the season in the 55th minute as he capitalized on a through ball from junior Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.). Shortly thereafter, freshman Thomas Ballenthin (Lexington, Mass.) played a cross from the left side and Davis was able to get on the end of it and score his second goal of the afternoon. Freshman Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) also assisted on goal. Davis capped off his afternoon in the 65th minute with his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
PC senior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made four saves in 64:14 before giving way to classmate Byron Regester (Westerville, Ohio). Seton Hall's Mario DeClerico made eight saves.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. when they play at Pittsburgh.
