At the conclusion of the second administration of FIFA/LOC meeting at the home of FIFA in Zurich today, FIFA and the local organizing Committee announced that the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) to 2014 FIFA World Cup ™ will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro.
The IBC will be held at Riocentro. It was decided by the Council based on a highly competitive process with detailed analysis by various experts of FIFA, transmission with all three candidates – Brasilia, Sao Paulo and host future IBC – having submitted bids. Rio de Janeiro was chosen for many reasons, including the quality of infrastructure, the variety of accommodation and activities available in the city, as well as his strongly expressed willingness to provide all possible support for IBC and its users.
"I can tell you that it was a very difficult decision; all candidates were of great quality and has shown great commitment. But unfortunately there can be only a selected host and we felt that the best overall for FIFA Rio de Janeiro. This IBC will be one of the most advanced information centers throughout the world for the months of June and July 2014. Is a vital component, which connects the FIFA World Cup to the rest of the world and ensure that people worldwide have the latest and best coverage of our great game, "said FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke, who chaired the meeting with President LOC Ricardo Teixeira.
The event as a whole, in which the IBC is an integral part, will create an inheritance much beyond the World Cup in terms of telecommunications infrastructure of State-of-the-art for the country/region, that can be used for future events. To give an idea of the scale of the IBC, in 2010, 179 broadcasters from more than 70 countries had in-house productions with 13,000 staff members in South Africa.
Other topics discussed at the meeting of the Board of directors include the ongoing preparations for the preliminary draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup ™, which will take place at the Marina da Gloria in Rio de Janeiro on July 30, 2011. "We are very pleased with the progress and I look forward to accommodate teams and the world media for the first major event on the road for 2014. We promise a great pleasure for guests at the headquarters, but also on TV. We have been told that this preliminary design will break a new record in terms of live broadcasts, "said Ricardo Teixeira.
The Board of Directors of FIFA/LOC also received detailed reports on various operational areas, including the progress of construction/upgrade of the stadium, with most of the activity that is well on track. However, it was clarified that only the city with a ready early stage will be eligible fora 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. As a result, the city of Sao Paulo and Natal are not eligible for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
Concerns remain with regard to airport operations and capabilities, as well as transport infrastructure, which were addressed with the highest authorities Brazilin. "It is essential that any places that host the FIFA World Cup have adequate infrastructure to meet tens of thousands of viewers and allow them to move around the city for a particular game. If this is not the case, we cannot stage matches in those cities, "stressed FIFA Secretary General at the conclusion of the meeting.
The next meeting of the Board of Directors of FIFA/LOC is scheduled for 26 July, at the beginning of the week of activities preliminary draw to Rio de Janeiro.
