Socceroo Luke Wilkshire says the “mental strength and toughness” of Australian players is one of the national team’s biggest weapons heading into the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The Dynamo Moscow player put his hand up for his country’s Asian Cup Qualifier against Kuwait this week and has become a key part of Pim Verbeek’s side since bursting onto the international scene as an unknown with Guus Hiddink at the 2006 World Cup.
He has pinpointed his the mental attributes of his international teammates as one of their greatest strengths and they will likely need it, having been drawn in one of the toughest groups at the World Cup.
Australia will face off against three-time World Cup winners Germany, African powerhouses Ghana and the in-form Serbia.
"I'd say it's the Australian in us - we're all winners, we're all fighters,'' Wilkshire told AAP. "Playing for our country, you won't see any of us dropping off or giving up or letting things go easily. It's just inside of us.
"A lot of the boys, you see the things they're playing for, the careers they're carving out for themselves, a lot of that has got to do with mental strength and toughness.
"There's a lot of mental toughness in this team.''
