World Cup ticket requests through the roof
The third phase of ticket sales for the 2010 World Cup has seen the number of ticket applications eclipse the 500,000 mark within the first 10 days, FIFA stated on Monday.
According to soccer's world governing body, 386,300 of the half million ticket requests were made by South African residents, or roughly 77 per cent of the total applications.
FIFA said that 114,237 ticket applications came from 166 other countries around the world.
South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup from June 11 to July 11.
"The number of domestic applications have increased significantly. By buying a ticket, South Africans buy not only a seat to watch a match, but also their spot in South African history," said Danny Jordaan, head of the local organizing committee.
FIFA put one million tickets on sale on Dec. 5 and fans must apply by Jan. 22 deadline.
South African fans pay $19 US for the cheapest seats at group matches. International prices start at $80.
